While it’s nothing new and in fact trivial, it’s always interesting to hear an insider’s account of that popular nexus of media, big money and politics.  This is especially true as the U.S. attempts to endure what’s amusingly described as the democratic election process.

In this clip, Bill Moyers interviews former political insider and screenwriter Marty Kaplan about the institutional relationships between politicians and the lobbyists who not only support them, but in reality control them through the allure of enormous campaign contributions.

When asked if Washington politics amounts to a con game, Kaplan responds by describing it as “the biggest con game going.”  And Kaplan, like all other insiders before and after him, should know.

Not for nothing, but it’s probably useful to keep this in mind during the next few months and beyond if you believe intellectual self-defense and self-preservation are values worth pursuing.
